How ‘Mother’ met its ending (SPOILERS)

For nine seasons, Barney Stinson has been legendary. First as a pickup artist, then as a partner, and always as a friend. Pressures were high for How I Met Your Mother to give its arguably most popular character the sendoff he deserves, especially since there have been worrisome theories that Barney wouldn’t live to hear future-Ted tell his kids the story. Apparently, we were worried about the wrong thing, because though Barney lives, he and Robin got divorced and he has a baby with a stranger. Go figure. Before the finale could even let us start to worry about his mortality, Barney and Robin’s marriage fell apart. In the same episode that showed their wedding reception, we saw their divorce. Yes, just three years after their wedding, Barney and Robin got divorced because of the strain from Robin’s constant traveling for work. That’s why they drank so much in the “Rally” flash-forward — to avoid their emotions just before making the decision. And a few years after that, Barney changed forever.

How I Met Your Mother ran for nine seasons on CBS—an instant hit thanks debated whether or not he could stay at Robin and Barney’s wedding; by Timothy Russo, who popped the question to his girlfriend Jana Rugan.

The final episode filled in the gaps between present day and , when Ted finally answers the question posed in the series title to his adolescent children, with the biggest non-surprise of all: He winds up with someone you expected from the start. The episode was full of revelations: After Ted meets the Mother Cristin Milioti at Barney and Robin’s wedding, he cancels his planned move to Chicago, but she can’t get married as planned because “I want to fit in my dress,” she says, revealing a pregnancy.

Five years and a second child later, they finally tie the knot. Robin and Barney get divorced after three years of marriage, as Robin’s hectic travel schedule as a now-hotshot TV reporter leads to friction with Barney. Among other issues, his “lifestyle blog for the sophisticated urban gentleman” suffers from a lack of Wi-Fi at an Argentinian hotel. Despite Patrice not being an obvious match for Barney as she is the most caring person in the world, they believe his attraction to her is an over-correction from previously dating Quinn, who he did not trust. The one person not happy for Barney is Robin, who, despite stating that she is no longer in love with Barney herself, doesn’t understand Barney and Patrice’s pairing.

Robin believes that if she can get a hold of Barney’s playbook and show it to Patrice, Patrice in turn will dump Barney for seeing who he really is.

Robin tries to get Barney’s “Playbook” out of jealousy over his new girlfriend, Marshall catches his mom having sex with Lily’s dad, and Ted tries to get everything.

In my opinion, the series peaked in its fourth season, and though they continued to deliver some nice episodes through fifth and sixth seasons, the series started losing momentum in the later seasons. The early days of How I Met Your Mother were quite mushy, and there was just no better way to express that mushiness than Ted trying to make it rain for Robin. The revelation of this secret had Marshall and Barney getting engaged in a slap bet that went on for years.

Ten Sessions gave us one of the most awe-inducing sequences of the show in the form of that two-minute date that Ted planned for Stella. This was way before we learnt that Stella was going to break his heart, so watching him try earnestly here was really cute. Just the thought of this episode makes me feel hungry. While the gang hops from restaurant to restaurant in search of the best burger, it is Robin and her expressions that hold the episode together.

Be prepared to watch this episode, but only with a burger next to you! HIMYM was its best when it made its characters put their friendship above everything else, and Intervention did exactly that. The intervention banner here spoke about their lasting friendship and was also a strong signal to the fact that Ted and Stella might not end up together. Another great episode from Season 4, this one has the gang separated and trapped in a snowstorm that lasts for three days.

Marshall and Lily are trying to keep their relationship rituals alive, and Robin is helping them achieve that. The best bit here was Ted and Barney getting to run their own bar named Puzzles.

But did he learn? He dated her for a bit in his 20s on and off until Lily was able to pull the plug and shoo her off. She was an off-the-wall kook whose obsession with Ted was crazy. She stole from him, ransacked his apartment, and did a whole bunch of other off-the-wall things. Her name was Carol. He managed to look past that though, thanks to her being so beautiful. Ted had it bad for a woman named Tiffany Carrie Underwood who was a pharmaceutical rep, though it seemed he never quite was able to crawl out of the Friend Zone.

She kept Ted on the hook even though she herself had a boyfriend. Eventually, Ted finally came to grips with this and walked out of her life. It was painful to watch, though. Seriously, idk if the Gap had a sale on all things eggplant and lilac or what, but these guys are rocking more purple than Barney. There are two schools of thought regarding purple. This just means that purple people — like Robin with the purple giraffe — are not suited for Ted.

To be fair, things never got nasty between the two of them – they got together, got married, and eventually divorced and stayed friends, even after everything that happened. Though they cared deeply for each other, there are many things that happened in their relationship that would never be acceptable in today’s dating culture. Barney had feelings for Robin and wanted to be with her, but instead of coming clean to her about it, he told everybody except Robin.

So, Ted, Marshall and Lily everyone were aware of the secret. Though Robin wasn’t all that uncomfortable about it, any millennial today would not be okay with this, especially since there are so many ways you can reach out and express your interest.
